Heat Pumps

Domestic heat pumps

A heat pump performs the same role as a boiler does in a central heating system, but it uses ambient heat from the air or ground rather than burning fuel to generate heat. Our environment is full of energy, surprisingly even at sub-zero temperatures there is still plenty of energy available.

Heat pumps extract the suns stored energy from our environment by using conventional refrigeration technology, in the same way a fridge extracts heat from within the fridge. An air or ground source heat pump extracts heat from outside (air or ground). Heat pump systems work more efficiently when delivering lower temperatures, so they are more suited to homes with under floor heating, larger radiators or specifically designed (usually fan assisted) radiators that will give the desired heat output at the lower flow temperatures.
